Are you someone with light coloured hair and looking for a new look? Or are you someone who is looking to cover up the grey hair on your head? Well, you can now do it without any chemical dyes, but just by using natural ingredients. Check out these natural hair dye hacks below to darken your hair naturally.
1. The henna and indigo powder dye hack:
Henna is a common hair care ingredient for darkening hair colour and giving it an orangish tinge. Henna dye/powder comes from the crushed leaves of the henna plant. Indigo powder is often known as black henna and comes from the crushed leaves of the indigo plant. Since indigo powder is a bluish dye, applying it directly to your hair will give it a bluish tinge and therefore to get darker shades like brown, auburn or black, the hair has to be primed with henna treatment, before using indigo powder.
Ingredients:
Henna dye (Step 1):
- 300 ml of lemon juice
- 100 grams organic henna powder
Indigo powder dye (Step 3):
Ingredients:
- 300 ml water
- 100 grams organic indigo powder
Method:
Step 1: In a mixing bowl, add in the henna powder and slowly keep adding the lemon juice and keep mixing it until it becomes a smooth paste. Set this aside overnight or for around 8 hours for the dye release.
Step 2: Read Tip 1 below before application. Apply this henna powder and lemon juice mixture all over your hair evenly, by parting your hair into sections, applying generously and leave it on for 2 to 3 hours, covering your head with a shower cap and then wash off with just water, without shampoo as you will be using the indigo powder for darkening after this step.

Step 3: In a mixing bowl, add in the indigo powder and slowly keep adding the water and keep mixing it until it becomes a smooth paste. Set this aside overnight for 4 to 6 minutes before application.
Step 4: Read Tip 1 below before application. Apply this indigo powder and water mixture all over your hair evenly, by parting your hair into sections, applying generously and leave it on for 2 to 3 hours, covering it with a shower cap (the longer you leave it the darker the colour gets and longer it lasts). Then rinse off with warm water.
Please Note: It is not advisable to shampoo your hair once you have put the dye, so therefore, shampoo your hair before dyeing it with the henna itself (initially).
Tips:
- Apply some oil at the hairline, forehead and neck before applying the henna, as it can prevent the skin from staining.
- Wear gloves while applying the henna/indigo powder, as you do not want to stain your hands. Also, be watchful of your clothes and seating area, to wipe off anything immediately, if any drops down, to avoid staining.
- These quantities are for shorter hair lengths and for longer hair lengths, you can increase the quantities proportionately. READ MORE – natural shampoo to stop hair fall
2. Coffee hair dye hack:
Coffee has a distinct smell and flavour and has a lot of nutrients and vitamins that can benefit your overall hair health and also its application can help darken your hair colour and improve the hair texture, on a temporary basis. This hack is more suitable for people with lighter coloured hair, rather than darker shades of hair, as it just darkens your hair by a shade or two.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups of water
- 10 tbsp coffee powder
Method:
Step 1: In a heating pot, add in the water and once it starts to boil, add in the coffee powder and let it simmer for a few minutes. Then let it sit for half an hour until it cools down. (If you have an coffee maker, you can use that machine to make the coffee, using these proportions). Then strain out the coffee liquid into a bowl.
Step 2: Pour this liquid all over your hair very slowly and let it soak in. Tie up your hair into a loose bun and cover your head with a shower cap and leave it on for 1 to 1.5 hours. Then wash your hair with a mild shampoo and conditioner and pat dry it with a towel. READ MORE – Black Tea to darken hair and stop hair fall
