Have you been using the same old makeup brush since a long time? Or do you find yourself having to keep going to the store or shopping online to buy new makeup brushes, because your old ones are dirty or overused? Using unclean makeup brushes for a long time can lead to clogging of pores, skin irritation, skin allergies, staph infection etc. Also, other than the side effects on your skin, you also won’t be able to get the optimal application and the shades of makeup you are using can get distorted. Therefore cleaning your makeup brushes from time to time is very important.

3 BEST WAYS TO CLEAN MAKEUP BRUSHES

Well, check out these three easy ways to clean your makeup brushes and make them as good as new!

1. Liquid soap and oil hack:

Castile soap is antibacterial and can help to clean the brushes, while the jojoba oil can do the job of getting rid of all of the excess product residue in the brushes and conditioning the bristles.

You will need:

  • 1 tbsp liquid castile soap or dish soap
  •  1 tbsp jojoba oil

Method: In a small bowl, add in the dish washing liquid and jojoba oil and mix it just a little. Then take your make up brushes and one by one swirl each brush gently pressing downwards into this mixture for a few seconds. Then once you have completed this process for each brush, you can start washing off the bristles under running water, gently using your fingertips to make sure all the oil and soap mixture has been properly rinsed off. Then wipe them on a paper towel to get the excess water out and then let them dry out on the paper towel overnight or until completely dry.

Tip: You can also use this method to clean your beauty blender as well. If required, for brushes having thicker product residue, you can increase the quantity of dish soap by adding a little more, to help get it off more easily. 2. Distilled white vinegar and liquid soap hack:

Dish soap is antibacterial and can help to clean the brushes, while the vinegar can help disinfect the brushes and naturally deodorize them.

You will need:

  • 1 cup of hot water
  • 1 tbsp liquid dish washing soap
  •  1 tbsp distilled white vinegar

Method:

In a wide mouth glass jar (like a mason jar) or glass bottle pour in one cup of hot water and then add in the dish washing soap and vinegar and mix a little bit. Then take your makeup brushes and place them downwards into the liquid mixture and see that all the brushes are well submerged up to their bristles. Leave it in the water for around 20 minutes. Then shake it off in the water and rinse it off under running water, gently using your fingertips to make sure all the liquid mixture has been properly rinsed off. Wipe them on a cloth towel to get the excess water out and then let them dry out on the cloth towel overnight or until completely dry.

Tip:

  • You can use this method for beauty blenders as well, but you will have to keep soaking the beauty blender into the water as it will float on the surface because it is light in weight.
  • You can use an Afro hair pick or a similar type of comb of medium tooth size, to run it gently through the bristles in downward motions, to help get rid of the excess residue more easily.

Caution: Hold the brushes downwards under the water when you are washing them as you do not want to get any water into the handle, as it will loosen up the glue holding the bristles together.

3. Baking soda and liquid soap hack:

Dish soap is antibacterial and can help to clean the brushes, while using baking soda can help loosen the product reside stuck in the makeup brushes. The hair conditioner will help moisturize the bristles and keep them soft and smooth for future use.

 You will need:

  • 1 tbsp liquid dish washing soap
  • 1½ tbsp baking soda
  • ½ cup cold water
  • 1 tbsp hair conditioner

Method: In a small bowl, add in the dish washing liquid and 1 tbsp baking soda and mix it just a little. Then take your make up brushes and one by one swirl each brush gently pressing downwards into this mixture for a few seconds.

Then take another bowl and fill it up with ½ cup of cold water and add in ½ tbsp of baking soda and 1 tbsp of hair conditioner and mix it well. And dip the bristles into this mixture and swirl it around for 20 to 30 seconds, each brush individually.

Once you have completed this process for each brush, you can start washing off the bristles under running water, gently using your fingertips to make sure all the mixture has been properly rinsed off. Then wipe them on a paper towel to get the excess water out and then let them dry out on the paper towel overnight or until completely dry.
