I’m sure a lot of you might have heard about this drink and wonder whether you should start drinking it too. But it is important to know its benefits and side-effects before drinking it.

Honey and Lemon are both powerful ingredients and this combination can be beneficial to your health if you have it in moderate quantities.

Benefits of drinking lemon and honey water:

1. Detoxifies the body and boosts body immunity:

Lemons are high in vitamin C. This property of lemons can help fight free radical damage to the body. Free radicals are unstable molecules that build up in cells and cause damage to other molecules in the body, such as DNA, lipids and proteins. This may increase the risk of developing diseases. It helps to filter out toxins from the body and can protect the liver from damage by helping the body cleanse itself naturally and also reduce fat in the liver.

Caution:

Do not over consume lemon juice or lemon water as it also does have its side effects. Since  it is essential to consume it in moderation. Excessive consumption of lemon juice or lemon water can lead to enamel (the outermost layer of a tooth) corrosion or tooth decay, heartburn, nausea and vomiting, Gastroesophageal reflux symptoms etc.

2. Beneficial to the skin:

Lemons have antioxidant properties which can help reduce skin damage and premature aging. Lemon has a pH level and can help decrease the oil in the skin and reduce inflammation. Drinking lemon and honey water can help improve blood circulation and promote collagen  (a structural protein found in the skin) production in the skin, which will help keep away wrinkles and fine lines and delay the onset of aging to the skin.

3.  Can aid weight loss:

Apart from the other benefits of lemon and honey water, this drink can also help aid digestion and boost the body metabolism in turn promoting weight loss and fat burn very more easily. Drinking lemon and honey water can help you feel fuller for longer hours and therefore reduce the intake of calories.

4. Beneficial to heart health and lowering of blood pressure:

Honey and lemon water acts as a natural diuretic (substances that enhance and increase the amount of water and salts expelled from the body as urine). This can decrease the fluid build-up in the body that can trigger high blood pressure which could lead to heart problems. Here’s how you can make lemon and honey water at home:

Ingredients:

1 tbsp lemon juice

1 tsp honey

1 glass water (250 ml)

In a glass of warm water, add in the lemon juice and honey and stir well. Drink this on an empty stomach early morning and wait for half an hour before consuming any food or any other beverage.

You can also pre-make this Honey Lemon preserve, and add it to your water. Here’s how you can make it:

Honey Lemon preserve:

18 to 20 lemon slices

1 to 1½ cup organic honey

6 one inch thin slices of ginger (optional)

Method:

Step 1: Wash the lemons thoroughly under running water and then cut them into thin slices (approximately 0.5 cm each) and remove the seeds.

Step 2: Into a mason jar add in two slices of lemon and place 2 slices of ginger in it and then add in a layer of honey to soak in and cover the lemon slices. Then repeat this process of adding in two slices of lemon and one layer of honey. You can place the ginger slices in between after every sixth lemon slice approximately. Do this process till all the lemon is soaked into the honey properly.

Step 3: Cover the mason jar with a lid and store it overnight in the refrigerator. The Honey Lemon preserve will be ready to consume after around 24 hours, as the lemon, ginger and honey would then be infused.

Step 4: Every morning on an empty stomach, take one glass (250 ml) of warm water and take out two slices of lemon from this preserve and similarly 2 tbsp of honey and mix it well and consume it and thereafter wait for half an hour before consuming any other food or beverage.
