Our walls often get dirty! Be it marker stains, oil stains, grease stains, food stains, oil stains and the list goes on. Seeing a stained wall is unpleasant and often, we look for ways to get rid of the stain as soon as possible (without having to wait until the wall is painted next).
Well, how about try out hacks that actually work? I’ve got ways to remove different types of stains from painted walls. Also, I’ve added information about how to clean walls with different types of paints as well, for the purpose of wall maintenance of course.
Clean Stains off a Painted Wall| 10 Types of Stains
1. Hair Dye Stain
Use a damp magic eraser sponge to rub over the stain in circular motions and then wipe the area clean with a dry cloth.
2. Food Stain
Make a thick paste with baking soda and water. Apply it over the stained area and rub it with a clean cloth. Then, wipe off with a damp towel first and then with a dry towel.
3. Pencil Stain
You can simply take a magic eraser sponge and wet one corner. Use it to rub off the pencil stain from the painted wall.
4. Permanent Marker Stain
Use some hairspray (one with alcohol), to spray over the stained area. Wipe it with a clean dry cloth.
5. Mould Stain
Make a mixture of baking soda and diluted vinegar (with water). Spray over the stained area and let it sit for some hours. Wipe off with a clean damp towel.
6. Crayon Stain
Make a mixture of baking soda and water (a thick mixture) and apply over the stained area. Use a sponge to scrub the stain and wipe away with a damp towel (which was previously soaked in soapy water). Lastly, wipe off with a clean dry towel.
7. Grease Stain
Make a mixture of dishwashing soap and warm water. Soak a clean cloth into the mixture, drain out the water until damp and use it to wipe the stain until clean.
8. Smoke Stain
Make a mixture of vinegar, ammonia and warm water. Soak a sponge into this mixture. Then, use the coarse side of the sponge to rub the stain. Wipe with a damp cloth and thereafter, with a dry cloth.
9. Wax Stain
Use a hair dryer close to the wax stain to melt the wax. Then, use a paper towel to quickly wipe off the melted wax stain.
10. Ink Stain
Make a mixture of baking soda and water, to form a thick paste. Apply over the stained area and let it sit for a few minute. Wipe off using a clean cloth.
How to Clean Different Types of Painted Walls?
1. Walls with Semi-Gloss Paint
You will need to fill ½ a bucket with warm water and add in 2 tablespoons of dish washing detergent. Give it a mix and use a soft sponge to wipe down the wall.
2. Walls with Latex Paint
You will need to fill ½ a bucket with warm water and add in 2 tablespoons of dish washing detergent, along with 3 tablespoons of distilled white vinegar. Give it a mix and use a microfiber towel to wipe down the wall.
3. Walls with Flat Paint
You will need to fill ½ a bucket with warm water and add in 1 tablespoon of dish washing detergent. Give it a mix and use a soft sponge to wipe down the wall.
4. Walls with Oil-Based Paint
You will need to fill ½ a bucket with warm water and add in 1 tablespoon of dish washing detergent, along with 2 tablespoons of distilled white vinegar. Give it a mix and use a microfiber towel to wipe down the wall.
