It helps to define the room better and also enhances the placement of the furniture on the rug. It brings about a sense of placement and design to a room.

Here’s a simple do’s and don’ts rug size guide you can follow:

Rug Size Guide for the Dining Room

Do: Make sure your rug is much larger than the size of the table (and chairs), even when the chairs are pulled out and are in use. This means that the pulled out chairs too should be able to fit on the rug. So, your rug size should be around 24 to 36 inches larger than the size of your table (to be able to fit all four feet of your chairs (even when pulled out and in use.

Some suggested rug sizes are 8 X 10 feet and 9 X 12 feet (depending on the size of your table of course).

Don’t: Do not buy a rug that only fits your table or only fits just the front feet of your table chairs.

Rug Size Guide for the Living Room

Do: Place your rug in such a way, that at least the front feet of your furniture will be on the rug.

Recommended Size: For this, your suggested rug size should be around 8 X 10 feet, 9 X 12 feet or for smaller living rooms 6 X 9 feet.

Don’t: Make sure not to place your rug only to fit the center table, leaving the front feet of the furniture on the ground.

Rug Size Guide for the Bedroom

Do: Your rug size should be around 36 inches larger than the size of your bed (on at least 3 sides, the sides and the bottom). This will ensure enough walking space (on the rug) around the sides of your bed.

Also, your rug should cover around three-fourths of your bed, which is until the edge of your bottom side of your pillow.

Recommended Size: Suggested rug sizes would be 5 X 7 feet for a twin bed, 8 X 10 feet for a queen-sized bed and 9 X 12 feet for a king-sized bed.

Don’t: Do not buy a rug too small that only your beg fits on it, without it being able to extend on at least three sides.

Rug Size Guide for the Hallway

Do: In case you wish to place a rug or a runner in the hallway, make sure that it covers the entire length of your hallway (from door to door or from one threshold to the other).

Recommended Size: As for the breadth of the rug or runner, leave about six inches of space on either side. So, you could look out for a rug or a runner that is around 4 to 6 inches narrower than the total breadth/width of your hallway (in case there are walls on either side).

Make sure that in case you have doors on either side of the rug (length or breath wise), let it be easy to open and shut your door without having to fold or bend the rug/runner. This means that the rug or runner shouldn’t be a hindrance or an obstruction in your doorway.

Don’t: Do not buy a rug that is too short, to just fit half the length of your hallway. Also, do not buy a rug that is too narrow and doesn’t sufficiently cover the breadth of the hallway.
