How to make pure aloe vera gel at home, in two ways:
Method 1: You will need:
- Fresh aloe vera leaves
- Xanthan Gum ( clear, cosmetic grade)
- Geogard 221 or Geogard ECT
Here’s how you can make the natural aloe vera gel at home:
Step 1: Cleaning the aloe vera leaves – Wash your aloe vera leaf under running water thoroughly, to get rid of any impurities. Then, cut off around half inch to one inch from the bottom or base of the aloe vera leaf.
Place the leaf with the cut side facing downwards, into a glass jug or glass tumbler and fill it with water until the cut portion is properly submerged in the water and leave it overnight in the water.
The next morning remove the leaves from the water and pat dry it with a tissue or clean cloth. Then you can remove the teeth like structures from the sides of the leaf using a vegetable peeler or a knife.
Next, using the peeler or a knife, peel off the outer rind of the leaf and scrape out the gel/flesh using a spoon.
Step 2: Obtaining the aloe vera juice/slime – Into a wide bowl, pour in all the flesh and then using a masher, mash all the flesh until soft and pulpy.
Next, place a muslin cloth over a bowl and pour in all the mashed aloe vera gel. Then, strain out all the slime-like gel from the aloe vera pulp and set aside.
Step 3: Combining the aloe vera juice with Xanthan Gum – Into a bowl, combine two teaspoons of the aloe vera juice with the xanthan gum. Give it a good mix and the set aside, covered, for around 30 minutes.
Step 4: Combining the aloe vera juice with Geogard 221 or Geogard ECT (a natural preservative) – Into the bowl containing the remaining aloe vera gel, add in the geogard and give it a mix. Then, pour in the xanthan gum mixture and stir well.
Set this aside for around 3 to 4 hours until the mixture thickens and forms a gel like substance.
Step 5: Storing your natural homemade aloe vera gel – Lastly, into a well-sterilized and airtight storage container, pour in the aloe vera gel and it is ready to use.
