Over the years, we have heard about onion juice being a wonder potion for the hair. But little do we know that onion oil too is just as wonderful for the hair as it is rich in sulphur and can prevent hair breakage, split ends and it can also prevent one’s hair from prematurely greying as onion oil helps maintain the pH levels of the hair. It can also help nourish the scalp, promote hair growth by improving blood circulation and stimulating the hair follicles.
Here are the benefits of applying onion oil for your hair:
1. To prevent premature greying of hair:
Onion oil is a great remedy for greying hair as the juice that comes out of onions can help increase catalase which is an enzyme that can help naturally darken one’s hair.
2. Stop hair fall :
Onions are rich in sulphur. This property of onions is beneficial to promote blood circulation on the scalp and provides stimulation to the hair follicles and improves collagen (a protein that can prevent hair follicle damage and promote hair root strength) production that nourishes the hair follicles, makes the hair grow faster and roots grow stronger.
3. For dandruff and scalp infections:
Onion oil has antibacterial properties that can treat and reduce dandruff, itchiness and other scalp infections.
4. To increase hair volume and promote hair shine:
Our hair often gets damaged and dry due to the kind of water we use, hair styling products, pollution, ultra-violet (UV) rays, over exposure to sunlight, etc and therefore onion oil can help restore hair lustre and shine over time and restore the bounce to your hair.

Using onion oil before washing your hair can act as a natural hair moisturizer and helps ensure that the hair stays hydrated even after the hair has been shampooed.

How to make onion oil at home:
- 2 large onions
- ½ cup coconut oil
Step 1: Remove the skin of the onions and wash them thoroughly under running water. Then chop them into 4 to 6 pieces each and grind it into a fine paste using a mixer grinder, along with 1 tbsp coconut oil. Set it aside.
Step 2: Into a heating pan, add in ½ cup of the ground onion paste and ½ cup of coconut oil and let it simmer on flame until the colour of the oil changes and the onion paste reduces to one fourth of its quantity. This process should take around half an hour. Turn off the flame and let it cool down completely.
Step 3: Strain this oil into a small storage container, using a muslin cloth and store in a cool and dry place.
Tip: You can add in 2 drops of any essential oil, if you dislike the distinct smell of the onion oil, as the essential oil will dilute the smell of the onion oil. You can watch the full video on youtube – here – How to make onion oil ( video)
How to use:
Into a small bowl, take the amount of onion oil you require for your hair length and volume. Heat it up until it becomes warm. Then detangle your hair so that it is free from knots and then partition your hair and apply this oil using a cotton pad or using your fingertips all over your scalp and hair evenly. When applying it on your hair, use downward strokes. Once the application process has been completed, gently massage the oil in using your fingertips, using circular motions, for 5 to 10 minutes. Then, leave it on for half an hour so that the oil can penetrate into the hair follicles. You can tie your hair into a loose bun. Then, rinse off using a mild shampoo and conditioner. It is advisable to do a patch test on a very small portion of your scalp before using it on your entire scalp, as some people have sensitive skin. For the patch test the oil should be left on for 10 to 15 minutes after application to that portion. Rinse off immediately if it causes you any burning or irritation and discontinue its usage with immediate effect.
