Essential oils are concentrated hydrophobic (water-repellent) liquids which contain chemical compounds from plants or in simple terms, the oil of the plants they are extracted from. Peppermint essential is usually promoted for topical use (applied to the skin) like how you’d apply cream or an ointment and is one of the most versatile of all the essential oils, as it has a plethora of both beauty and health benefits. Peppermint oil has antiseptic and antibacterial properties and can naturally cleanse the skin and has a cooling effect on the skin.

Stop hair fall and treat dandruff:
Since peppermint oil has a cooling effect, because it contains menthol, which can soothe irritation and inflammation on your scalp. Peppermint essential oil has antimicrobial properties, which could help reduce dandruff and itchy scalp. Peppermint oil can help treat a dry and itchy scalp, as it has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It can give a soothing and cooling effect to your scalp.
How to use as a hair spray –
In 1 tbsp of argan oil or any other hair oil of your choice, add in 3-4 drops peppermint essential oil and mix it well. Add 1/4 cup of freshly extracted aloe vera gel from the plant or aloe vera juice. Blend everything for a smooth finish and pour into a spray bottle. For hair growth and deep conditioning:
Peppermint oil is known to promote hair growth as it increases the blood circulation on the scalp and stimulates the hair follicles. It is known to promote hair growth during the anagen phase (active hair growth phase).
Scalp buildup is a common problem. Hair products, sebum (the oily waxy substance produced by the body’s sebaceous glands), dead skin etc can create an unhealthy environment for your hair to grow in. This can lead to irritation, inflammation, bacterial and fungal skin infections, which can in turn inhibit and hinder hair growth. The anti-inflammatory property of menthol present in peppermint oil can help reduce these issues.
How to use –
Mix one to two drops of peppermint essential oil into one tbsp of any carrier oil like black castor oil. Then apply this on your scalp, partitioning your hair to make the application process easier. After application, gently massage it in, using circular motions and let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes or overnight, before washing off with a mild shampoo and conditioner. Tip: You can also add in a few drops of peppermint oil into you shampoo and conditioner bottle.
Caution:
- Do not over add, as it is concentrated oil.
- Do not use it directly on your scalp, as it is too concentrated and the side effects will be intense like burning and skin irritation. Therefore always remember to dilute it with any other carrier oil, before using it in moderation thereafter.
3. For healing sunburns:
Since peppermint oil has a cooling effect along with anti-inflammatory properties, it can help provide ease and relief from the discomfort caused by the sunburn. It will help hydrate the skin and help the heat get dispersed quicker.
How to use –
Take around 20 ml of aloe vera gel and add in around 2 drops of peppermint oil and mix it well. Apply this on the area of the sunburn and it can help soothe the inflammation and irritation, in turn giving you relief from discomfort.
Caution: Do not over add the peppermint oil as it will increase the irritation and burning sensation
