How To Deep Clean Your Mattress

So, if this is new to you guys, let me share with you’ll some tips on how to clean and deep clean your mattress.

How to Deep Clean Your Mattress?

Deep cleaning your mattress once in every three months is the recommended cycle. Keeping up to this cycle can also help keep dust mites and mould away from your mattress.

Nevertheless, in case you aren’t able to keep up to this cycle, make it a point to deep clean your mattress once in at least every six months.

1. Vacuum your Mattress

For those who have vacuum cleaners, it will be a great practice to vacuum your mattress once in every two weeks at least, i.e., each time you change your bedsheets.

This can help get rid of dust, dead skin cells and any debris that may have fallen or got lodged on the mattress.

2. Spot Treat Stains

Since mattresses cannot be “washed” in a washing machine, you can hand wash it. Here’s how you can do it – make a mixture of 2 cups of hydrogen peroxide and 1 tablespoon of dish washing soap in a bowl or a container. Then apply the mixture to any stains using a sponge (make sure that the sponge is unused or completely clean). Let it sit for a few minutes. Then, using a damp rag, blot out the stain.

Note: It is advisable to treat any stains as soon as it forms, rather than wait until deep cleaning day. This will thereby make it easier for you to clean the stains without much effort.

3. Deodorize your Mattress

Mattresses can sometimes get a bad odour due to sweat collection or can have a stale smell due to dust, dead skin cell collection over time. Therefore, deodorizing your mattress is essential.

All you need to do is sprinkle some baking soda mixed with a few drops of essential oil all over your mattress and let it sit for an hour or so. The baking soda can help neutralize any odour from the mattress with its chemical properties, as it is a natural deodorizer.

4. Use Alcohol to Get Rid of Mould

In case your mattress hasn’t been used in a while, it could have caught mould. Therefore, you could use some isopropyl (a type of rubbing alcohol) over the mouldy area or in case not available, you could also use store-bought mould spray to help scrub off the mould.

5. Use an Anti-Allergy Mattress Protector

Anti-allergy mattress protectors are mattress covers that have been treated with antimicrobial technology and thus can help protect the mattress from any bacterial growth and buildup. It can also inhibit the growth of dust mites. They can also help prevent dust and dead skin cells from getting lodged in the mattress.

Note: This product is highly recommended for those who suffer from allergies, asthma etc.

6. Beg bugs and dust mites

Food grade Diatomaceous Earth powder, also called as DE powder is a commonly used bed bug repellant. It is made up of fossilized diatoms, which are tiny aquatic organisms and comes in the form of a white colored powder.  DE powder contains silica which can help kill insects, including bed bugs.

A recipe for a DIY bedbug or dust mites repellant could be:
