Here are 5 cold, cough, and flu remedies with ginger:
1. Fermented Ginger Garlic Honey
Ingredients:
- ½ cup whole garlic cloves peeled and slightly crushed
- 3 oz peeled ginger
- 1 cup honey
Method:
Into a glass jar, add the peeled garlic pods and the thinly sliced pieces of ginger. Top it up with a cup of honey and make sure the garlic and ginger have been properly immersed into the honey. (You could also place the sealed jar upside down). Seal the jar with a lid and place in a cool dry place for around 3 weeks until the mixture ferments.
Once every 2 to 3 days, make sure to open the jar, give it a slight mix with a clean spoon, and close it again to ferment. After around 3 weeks, it is ready to use. You can also add a teaspoon full to a cup of warm water and squeeze in some lemon juice to make a honey ginger tea.
2. Ginger Cough Drops
Ingredients:
- 75 grams of fresh ginger paste
- 200 grams jaggery or palm or coconut sugar
- ¼ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp pepper
- ¼ tsp turmeric powder
Method:
Into a saucepan, add the ginger paste and mix well over medium heat for a few minutes. Thereafter, add in the jaggery powder and give it a mix. Wait for a few minutes until the jaggery powder fully dissolves. Slowly increase the heat, mixing continuously, until you see the mixture leaving the sides of the pan. Then, add in the salt, pepper, and turmeric powder and give it a good mix until well combined. Turn off the heat.
Into a large baking tray or plate lined with parchment paper, using a spoon pour in coin–sized drops, or pour them into silicon molds and leave it at room temperature to set completely. It will fully harden when it’s ready.
Lastly, remove all the cough drops from the parchment paper and transfer into a bowl. Dust with sugar powder, mix well until all the cough drops are evenly coated with the sugar powder and thereafter, store in an airtight container.
