Scalp health is often taken for granted, as we focus more on our hair, shampooing it and finding the right conditioner. But ideally scalp health is also very important as it is where the hair follicles emerge from. Your scalp health, will determine your hair health and therefore it is important to keep your scalp healthy.
A healthy scalp is clear from flaking or dandruff and free from any scalp redness or irritation, dryness or any scalp infections. A lot of people suffer from scalp issues like dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, etc which is linked to hair breakage and loss of hair shine and having poor scalp health can lead to premature hair loss.
One of the main ways to having a healthy scalp is by using a scalp scrub. It can help exfoliate the scalp and remove dead skin cells, dirt and buildup from the scalp. Therefore, scalp exfoliation is very important.
Here are some of the easiest scalp scrub recipes to make at home:
1. Apple Cider Vinegar Scrub – help deep cleanse the hair right from the roots and eliminates dandruff by reducing sebum production.
2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup water
Into a small mixing bowl, add in apple cider vinegar with the mother and water. After shampoo, pour this mixture on your scalp. Massage it in and rinse off after 10 mins.
2. Bentonite Clay Scrub – can be beneficial to help remove the excess dead skin cells, excess oil, dirt, product buildup and dandruff.
1 tbsp bentonite clay
Into a mixing bowl, add in the bentonite clay and little by little, add in the water and keep mixing. As you see the mixture forming an applicably thick paste, it is ready to use. Section your hair and apply the clay mask on your scalp, leave it on for 10 mins and rinse off. Use a mild shampoo to wash your hair.
3. Coffee Scrub
1 tbsp coffee grounds
2 tbsp shampoo
1 tsp coconut oil
Into a small mixing bowl, add in coffee grounds, shampoo and oil. Mix well, until properly combined. Apply the scrub on your scalp very gently and massage for 60 secs. Rinse off thoroughly.
4. Sugar Scrub – helps loosen product buildup and impurities, which can help to make the scalp healthy and boost hair growth.
1 tbsp semi-granulated sugar or cane sugar
1 tsp any hair oil of your choice
2 tbsp aloe vera gel
few drops of peppermint essential oil ( optional)
Into a small mixing bowl, add in the semi-granulated sugar or cane sugar, aloe vera gel and hair oil and mix well, until the ingredients are well combined. Apply the scrub on your scalp very gently and massage for 60 secs. Rinse off thoroughly.
5. Lactic acid – help promote collagen (a structural protein found in skin) production and also stimulates hair growth.
Mix equal parts of 5% lactic acid with water.
Massage it all over your scalp, leave it on for 10 mins and rinse off. Repeat this once or twice a month.
How to use these scalp scrubs for exfoliating your scalp?
Wash your hair with water and then apply this on your scalp and gently exfoliate and massage it in using circular motions. Do this for 5 to 8 minutes and then wash off with a mild shampoo and condition as usual.
6. Scalp brush– Scalp brushes can help promote blood circulation by dilating the blood vessels under your skin, in turn boosting hair growth.
To use – You can use the scalp brush on dry scalp.
You can use it after applying hair oil or wet your hair and apply your shampoo. Gently massage the product into your scalp in circular motions for 1-2 mins.
