The spooky season is just around the corner yet again and the kids are out again on the streets trick or treating. So, what do you have for them this time?
Well, how about you try out some new easy homemade treats this time, rather than the same old store-bought ones? There are so many easy and simple treats you could make at home and trust me, not just the kids, you’ll live them too!
Here are 6 of my favourite Halloween treats to make at home:
1. Ghost Cookies
Ingredients:
- 175 grams icing sugar
- 10 chocochip cookies
- 10 marshmallows
- Thick chocolate ganache (to pipe)
Method:
Into a mixing bowl, add in the icing sugar and 5 tbsp of water and give it a mix. Let the consistency be thick enough, but pourable.
Next, set out the 10 cookies on a tray lined with parchment paper. Dip the bottom of each marshmallow and place on the center of the cookie to secure in place.
Thereafter, using a spoon pour the icing over each marshmallow until it drips on all sides. Let it set and lastly, use the chocolate ganache (poured into a mini tip piping bag), to pipe the eyes and nose.
2. Ghost Teeth/ Ghoul Dentures
Ingredients:
20 apple slices
(About ½ inch thick slices)
A pack of mini marshmallows
(About ½ inch to 1 inch in size)
Peanut butter
Method:
Place a tray lined with parchment paper and spread 10 slices of the apples over it. Spread a generous layer of peanut butter over each slice and thereafter at the end with the peel place the marshmallows next to each other over the edge (forming the teeth).
Next, once again spread a generous layer of peanut butter over an apple slice and place it over the marshmallows (peel side facing outwards, above the teeth) and gently press down to secure. Repeat for the rest of the apple slices and then you’ll have the perfect ghost teeth!
3. Mummy Hotdogs
Ingredients:
- 6 sausages
- A pack of dough sheets
- 12 candy eyes
- 1 tbsp ketchup
Method:
Cut your dough sheets into strips of about ¼ inch each and then wrap the strips around the hot dogs to make it look like a half wrapped Egyptian Mummy. Let it form a criss-cross pattern over each hot dog. Leave some space for the eyes.
Thereafter, bake in a pre-heated oven at 375 degrees for about 10 to 15 minutes until the dough and hot dogs are golden brown.
Remove from the oven and stick the candy eyes little below the top using ketchup to secure to make the face and they’re ready to eat!
4. Halloween Cheese Crackers
Ingredients:
A pack of cheese crackers
Cheese slices
Method:
Place the crackers on a tray and thereafter, use different Halloween cookie cutters (like pumpkins, ghouls spiders etc.), to cut shapes in the cheese slices and place over each cracker individually. They’re ready to serve.
Note: You could you the leftover to make a cheese dip or add it into Mac ‘n’ Cheese pasta.
5. Homemade Gummy Worms
Ingredients:
5 tbsp gelatin
2 cups fruit juice of choice
1 tbsp honey
Method:
Into a bowl, mix 1 cup of the juice (the juice should be cold) along with the gelatin and let it sit for 10 minutes.
Next, add in the gelatin mixture into a saucepan with the remaining 1 cup of fresh juice (can be room temperature) and stir it in on low heat until all the gelatin has dissolved. Turn off the heat and let it cool completely, add in the honey and mix.
Thereafter, using a spoon (or a dropper or syringe to make the process less messy), pour into gummy worm molds and refrigerate until set. Demould and enjoy.
Tip: If you do not have gummy worm molds, you can fill a glass with broad straws (tightly packed) and fill each straw with the mixture and set it in the refrigerator. Later, once set, gentle cut open the straws (so as to not damage the “gummy worms”) and it’s ready to eat.
Note: Refrigerate until consumed.
6. Chocolate Ghost Strawberries
Ingredients:
15 strawberries
Melted white chocolate
30 candy eyes
Method:
Coat each strawberry with the melted white chocolate and place on a tray lined with parchment paper and refrigerate until set and hardened.
Thereafter, dip the back of each candy eye in the melted chocolate (to use it as glue) and stick it like eyes over the strawberries.
Note: You could also place a skewer inside each strawberry if you wish to. Also, in case you do not have candy eyes, you can use some melted dark or milk chocolate in a piping bag and pipe the eyes and nose to make the face.
